Laser machine creates microstructures for the automotive industry

Fraunhofer Group for Light and Surfaces /

In the automotive industry, more and more surfaces are getting a microstructure treatment. Whether they are added to cylinders or dashboards, functional surfaces are all the rage, but they require a high degree of precision of the tools.

A combination of nanosecond and picosecond pulses make the precision manufacture of functional surfaces also efficient.

A combination of nanosecond and picosecond pulses make the precision manufacture of functional surfaces also efficient.

With a virtually unlimited precision lasers create new areas of application. Within the project eVerest, Researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT together with partners from industry develop a complete machine and system technology for the efficient production of large-sized 3D mold tools for design surfaces. For the purpose of creating functional surfaces with high accuracy and efficiency, one part of the project is to combine nanosecond laser pulses and picosecond laser pulses in a step-by-step-process. In a first processing step a basic structure of the grain is made by high productive nanosecond laser pulses. In a next step, fine microstructures are generated by highly precise ultrashort picosecond laser pulses. During the project duration, which began in early 2016 and is scheduled to run until the end of 2018, the researchers will work on a complete solution from software and lasers to a machine concept to enable an efficient production of large 3D molds for designer surfaces, e.g. in automotive applications.

The Fraunhofer Institute ILT will present a designer surface with various structures at the Hannover Messe.
