Workshop "Sensing with Quantum Light" 2019

As a successor to last year’s Autumn School on Quantum Enhanced Imaging and Spectroscopy, Fraunhofer IOF and IPM and the Institute of Physics, Humboldt University, are proud to announce a Workshop on "Sensing with Quantum Light", which will take place from Sunday, Sept. 15th to Wednesday 18th, 2019, at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef.

Hybrid Materials and Additive Manufacturing Processes (HyMaPro)

The 2nd HyMaPro Workshop provides information on additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for metallic and ceramic components by means of hybrid materials, CAE-based virtual design, structural and functional optimization to additive manufacturing devices for multi-material approaches and parts.

Experience the functionality of additive manufacturing machines in practical sessions. Individually planned guided tours, plenary sessions and discussions in relaxed atmosphere present a unique platform for scientists and engineers to discuss latest R&D results. Join the HyMaPro Workshop.

Save the Date! AKL’20 from May 6–8, 2020

The ingenuity of pioneering breakthroughs can be witnessed in Aachen before the year is out. At its “AI for Laser Technology Conference” on November 6 and 7, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT will be tackling the question of how lasers can be used more efficiently with the help of artificial intelligence. Experts from companies including Daimler, Intel and Microsoft have already signed up for the event. The conference topics will range from machine learning in industrial settings to the use of augmented reality and analysis of neural networks.

  • Environmentally friendly: IWS Dresden ceramic coatings can reduce engine exhaust gases / 2019

    Heat shields for economical aircrafts

    To make aircrafts more economical, environmentally friendly and robust, Fraunhofer engineers from Dresden have developed a new ceramic heat shield technology. In this process, a powder of yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide (YSZ) is added to water to form a suspension. Quickly and cost-effectively this liquid powder mixture can be sprayed onto turbine blades or other aircraft parts. Such and similar thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) facilitate aircraft engines, which consume less fuel and do not contaminate the atmosphere as much.

    Professor Stefan Kaskel received high honors from renowned Tsinghua. The Beijing University appointed him Distinguished Visiting Professor. He was awarded the three-year title on the basis of many years of successful cooperation.

    Dr. Constantin Häfner named new Fraunhofer ILT director

    Effective November 2019, renowned laser physicist Dr. Constantin Häfner will be taking on the Directorship of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen. He is currently Program Director for Advanced Photon Technologies at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, where he has led the development of the world’s most powerful laser systems.

    At Deburring EXPO, the leading trade fair for deburring technology and precision surfaces in Karlsruhe, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT will be presenting current developments in the field of laser deburring and polishing from October 8 to 10, 2019.     Porous silicon layers for more efficient lithium-ion batteries

    The Fraunhofer FEP has developed coating processes for industry for several years. Recently in the project PoSiBat (funding reference 100275833), Fraunhofer FEP scientists were able to develop a non-toxic and efficient manufacturing process for porous silicon layers. The results of the recently completed project will be presented at the Thin Film Technology for Energy Systems workshop at V 2019 and at the Fraunhofer FEP booth No. 22 (October 8 –10, 2019, in Dresden, Germany).

    New Fraunhofer coating process provides effective protection for brake discs

    More than many other auto parts, brake discs are subject to repeated mechanical loads. As a result of this continual abrasion, they produce fine particulate matter, which pose a substantial environmental burden. Now, however, a new coating process developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT and RWTH Aachen University can significantly reduce this impact. By using “Extreme High-speed Laser Material Deposition”, known by its German acronym EHLA, it has proved possible to provide brake discs with an effective protection against wear and corrosion in a procedure that is both fast and economic.
